E.H.R. - Extreme Hamster Racing
Unreal Engine #ue4jam - Spring 2018
DISCLAIMER: All work shown in this section does not represent the current state of the game, but it is meant to showcase what was created during the 5-days-long ue4 jam. All farther progress and updates will be published in a separate article.
EHR is the result of an Unreal Engine game jam to which I took part with a few other individuals who were my colleague at the time. The theme of the jam was Transformation. The footage shown below is the result of 3 people's 5-days-worth of work.
EHR is a local multiplayer "kart" racer in which you control a hamster ball and acquire powerups to help you win or to obstruct your opponents.
EHR - Gameplay
This was my first game jam and during this 5 days period, I had the responsibility of designing powerups and the track. One of the things I quickly realized is that game jams are no place to learn new tools and design techniques, but it should be an opportunity to test and experiment with familiar methods and tools. I had to look into track design principles and to check out other kart racing games to get some inspiration, not being an aficionado of the genre.
Even though the game still doesn't feature any audio and we did not win the game jam (or got close to the highest standings), we felt very inspired by how this idea quickly came together in a very limited time.
